If the person is already out of custody, the result can still answer the immediate status question. There may be no future release event left on that custody episode to subscribe to. A later case or booking may require a new match and registration.
Limits of a Hardin VINE Check
VINE is an alert and quick-status layer, not the proof layer. Data comes from participating agencies and can lag. Coverage does not guarantee every historical release, and a “no result” does not prove that the person was released. It can reflect a spelling problem, identifier mismatch, source limitation, completed record, delay, or a custody system outside VINE.
VINE does not replace the Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator for a federal sentence or the ICE Online Detainee Locator for current immigration detention. For a person released before trial, compare the court order with the jail time and any Office of Statewide Pretrial Services information. For parole or MSR, use IDOC and the Illinois Prisoner Review Board channels. Final discharge can occur later than physical release. Read the exact status instead of inferring it from the fact that the person is no longer at one facility.
Note: A facility departure answers where custody ended; a discharge record answers whether the legal sentence or supervision also ended.
VINE and Illinois Registries
The Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry and Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry are separate conviction-based systems. A person may remain listed for an applicable registration term after release.
